MINISTER for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Malakai Tabar is impressed with the performance of girls in most schools through out Papua New Guinea.
While addressing women in the Gazelle district in Kerevat recently, he said that many secondary schools and tertiary institutions had reported positively on the performance of their female students. “The performance of girls in most of our schools is a lot better. That does not mean that our boys are not performing, it means that girls are now prioritising education,” he said. He said the results were positive and was the way forward for PNG. Tabar urged parents to take the results seriously and support their daughters to pursue formal education as a way to reduce poverty and promote gender equality. He further urged men in the country to appreciate their daughters and see them as equal to their sons and empower them to pursue education. Tabar said it was important to get more girls to prioritise education as a way of slowing down the population growth in the country. It is important that young parents understand this before planning the size of their families,” he said. The National
