Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra has challenged teachers to define quality education when implementing standard-based education (SBE) curriculum. He was speaking to some 700 primary school teachers during the launching of the national in-service training week in Port Moresby. “The success of the standard-based education curriculum depends on teachers and training,” Kombra said. He said the new curriculum was aimed at defining the meaning of quality education. “Improving the individual method of teaching is one aspect of trying to define quality education,” Kombra said. “Many teachers have been accustomed with a same trend of teaching. “This change in curriculum is calling for teachers to review, measure their own strengths and weaknesses and improve on to improve the quality of the education for our children.” Kombra said many had claimed the outcome-based education had destroyed education quality and called for a change. “The specifics of defining the quality education is for a teacher to know the aims of the subject, the relevance of the subject and how much time the subject requires in preparing and teaching the students,” he said.
