THREE University of Goroka students charged with defrauding the university in relation to the payment of tuition fees have appeared before the Goroka Committal Court. Benjamin Tengere, 24, of Paka village in Hela’s Lake Kopiago-Koroba district; Jason Joe, 25, of Porolo village in Lower Mendi, Southern Highlands; and Nimo Avefa, 21, of Kirihena village in the Henganofi district of Eastern Highlands, appeared before Magistrate Gerard Vetunawa on Thursday. He adjourned the matter to Nov 2 and extended their K500 police bail.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Albert Warkia said detectives had completed the files of the first 17 of the 47 students implicated in the tuition fee racket. Warkia said 17 files had been completed and submitted for prosecution. The first three appeared on Thursday. “The other 14 requested that they needed time to prepare for their examinations and wanted an extension (of their court appearance),” he said. “The students promised to come on Nov 2. “We have listed them to appear on the date.” Meanwhile, Criminal Investigation Division officer Michael Sewode said the remaining files would be completed in the next few days for prosecution on the case. The students will face a charge of false pretence with the intent to defraud the university administration knowingly and fraudulently presenting fake bank deposit butts and electronic receipts. The university is alleging that 54 students had paid K264,908 in tuition fees to be enrolled through altered bank deposit butts and imitated electronic deposit receipts. The university alleges that it found out that the total amount deposited was only K1531. The National Comments are closed.
