STUDENTS of Port Moresby National High School witnessed a presentation by the PNG Educational Robotics Lab (PERL) last week.
The presentation included showcasing of robotic devices and artificial intelligence performance by the NAO, the world’s first humanoid robot. PERL founder and ICT expert Shahram Honarzad said the presentation was aimed at getting students interested in robotics, computer programming, electronics and related subjects. Honarzad said the world was evolving in technology and it was better if they gave the students a fair idea of what they would be exposed to in a few years in terms of technology. He said in a few years there would be a demand for engineers to programme, fix and also people to sell these devices. “It will be just like the mobile communication industry today. In a few years robots would be used in everyday stuff and we have to prepare our students by integrating robotics into their studies to enhance their learning,” Honarzad said. “For example, with advanced robotic technology, you can now take aerial photography only with the use of a drone-attached camera which is controlled remotely.” He said robotic devices might be used in the classrooms and workplaces on some daily tasks. Deputy principal administration Matthew Maito said the technology was more advanced and challenging for both students and teachers in PNG and if integrated into the education system, it must be utilised properly.
