MORE than K25,000 was given to the family of the late Antonius Bito by his Port Moresby Technical College school mates on Monday. The students visited Bito’s family residence at Garden Hill, Port Moresby where his haus krai was held with K25,518 cash and cartons of drinks worth K500. From the K25,518, K5,000 was given separately to Bito’s guardian, Martha Keluku. Student Representative Council president Nason Saus said the money was a contribution from the student body to support the family of their friend to repatriate his body to his home in West New Britain. “We were able to collect that amount of money through contributions from students’ provincial and regional groups,” Saus said. “We also collected some public contributions from our wheelbarrow walk in the city on Friday and Saturday.” Saus said the students contributed K12,718 and K12,800 was from public contribution.
He said the student body appreciated the generosity of people who contributed during the two-day wheelbarrow walk. Bali Witu Association chairman Betrand Vagelo, when receiving the money from the students, said the family was surprised as they were not expecting nor demanding anything from students. “We appreciate your support and your continuous presence with us at the haus krai during this time of sorrow,” Vagelo said. “We will use the contribution to meet the expenses of transporting the body to our village,” he said. According to Vagelo, the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology would meet the repatriation costs of Bito’s body to from Port Moresby to West New Britain because Bito was a Higher Education Contribution Assistance Scheme student. He said his funeral would be held at the St Joseph Catholic Parish in National Capital District’s Boroko at 10am on Friday. He said the casket would stay overnight at his family home at Garden Hill and would leave for West New Britain the next day. Meanwhile, Bito’s guardian, Keluku, requested Pomtech male students to organise themselves in regions to be the casket bearers at the funeral.
