![]() A PRIMARY school teacher has admitted that enforcing social distancing proved difficult, however, the other Coronavirus (Covid-19) protocols such as hand sanitising and wearing masks were easier to follow. Hagara Primary School head teacher Henao Koregai told The National that schools were overcrowded with a high number of students to small classrooms and other infrastructure making social distancing hard to implement effectively. He said this was a reality faced by other primary schools.
Koregai said the school had not received its full subsidies for the school year and it could not build infrastructure or expand classrooms to cater for the number of students. He said the school was supposed to receive K200,000 in tuition free funds this year, but, only received K14,000 in term three which was late and not much could be done. “Most of the funds from the K14,000 covered ancillary staff, toilet materials, water, power bills, stationery and curriculum materials.” St Therese Catholic Primary School teacher Jason Aisi said they followed the “new normal” protocols such as hand-washing and mask-wearing, however, social distancing was an issue due to overcrowding. “We encourage all the students to wear face masks at all times in class and hand-washing always,” he said.
