TEACHERS and administrators across Papua New Guinea are training and working to provide the best teaching and learning resources for students. School learning improvement plans (Slips) are a key objective of the National Education Plan 2020-29. These documents provide a roadmap for schools and identify priority areas for improvement. Slips are developed by head teachers and are jointly approved by school boards and parents. But such planning is an acquired skill, and this is where the Pikinini Kisim Save (PKS) project ensures teachers and board members have the capability to deliver the best for their institution. At Buluma Elementary School in West New Britain’s Talasea, head teacher Russell Kamana was one of 817 teachers and head teachers who benefited from the capability building sessions of PKS project.
After attending in-service training on Slips, Kamana and one of his senior teachers were able to craft a Slip that met the specific needs of Buluma Elementary and focused on quality teaching. “Our teachers now follow a much more structured lesson plan that can be easily adjusted depending on each class,” he said. “The Slips are a tool that helps us both academically and administratively. “It is good to have Slips to guide the school board and administration on running the school.” In addition to professional development for teachers and new classroom resources, the PKS project also promotes girls’ education, school leadership development training and adult literacy – bringing parents, school boards and leaders together to collaborate on improving education. “Parents are more aware of what the school board and teachers are doing, thus can have a better opportunity to contribute to their children’s education,” Kamana said. “The Slip has improved the female intake. “In fact, most of our top students are girls.” Despite the progress to date, Kamana insists their work is not done yet and there are plans in place for projects related to school safety, teachers’ housing and infrastructure.
