SOUTHERN Highlands students at the University of PNG are apologising for the arson that occurred at Constitutional Park in Port Moresby during Maprik Day.
“I would like to apologise to the people of Maprik and their MP John Simon, National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, the Museum Arts and Gallery and the public for the arson that occurred on Aug 22 at the Constitutional Park,” Alex Wapia,” president of the UPNG Southern Highlands Students, said in a statement to The National. “Although it occurred at the date and location of our event, it happened hours after celebrations had ended.” Wapia said the day ended at 5pm and the incident occurred at 6pm, that’s was why they were unable to catch up with the culprit. “The Southern Highlands Students had already left the place,” Wapia said. Wapia condemned the act as it had made the Southern Highlands students feel they are to be blamed as well. He said they did not have any facts and evidence but they were working hard to find the culprit.
