![]() THE Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) curriculum is great for building social relationships and character development but the problem is whether it will continue without funding, says an official. In a recent consultation hosted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), ChildFund senior project officer Mcleen Pikachu welcomed the curriculum as a way to promote people having healthy relationships from an early age. “The sustainability of this curriculum is the biggest challenge that I see. “This process is currently tied to sponsored projects but what happens after the project ends? Will the schools, especially tertiary schools carry it on,” he asked. “We want a future where our future generations have respectful relations and are respectful to the most vulnerable in our communities.”
With support from the Education Department, Family Planning New South Wales and Spotlight Initiative, consultations will continue to see whether the curriculum is fit-for-purpose for Papua New Guinean classrooms. The education includes discussions about family life, relationships, culture and gender roles. It also addresses human rights, gender equality, making the right choices about your body and what to do when facing threats of sexual discrimination, abuse and violence. “I want to see people have healthy relationships and believe with the introduction of comprehensive sexuality education, we can tackle this issue,” Pikachu said. He said the PNG school curriculum leant heavily towards academics but there was little on social relationships and character development. The CSE, sometimes called Family life education, or character and social development, includes scientifically accurate and age-appropriate information about human development, anatomy and reproductive health. UNFPA facilitates the consultations on the CSE curriculum as part of the Spotlight Initiative and also supports by printing materials, such as copies of the CSE modules and content.
