A live demonstration of the E-Library platform named the ‘Sepik Genius’ was hosted at the Divine Word University’s St Benedict’s Campus in Wewak East Sepik Province on Thursday 28 May, 2019. Students and staff of the St Benedict’s Campus witnessed firsthand the live demonstration where a Grade seven student ordered two books under her grade level and got it lined up within seconds after ordering, to which she can go offline to read. Initiated by the Governor of the East Sepik Province, Allan Bird, the ‘Sepik Genius’ is likely to be the biggest rollout of a platform in the country, aimed at bettering the distribution of both the curriculum and library books to all urban and semi-urban schools in the province as time goes by. According to Governor Bird, DWU’s St Benedict’s campus was chosen for the live demonstration because it is a premier University’s campus where all the leading brains in the province are coming from, especially with the ones who will graduate and become teachers to teach the upcoming generation in East Sepik Province. “The vision is to change the way we do business because the current way is too expensive. We need to be smart and innovative to do things differently, faster and more effectively with less money and still come up with quality results. We’re calling it the ‘Sepik Genius’ in the essence that we’re using a smarter version to solve a bigger problem for our province,” Governor Bird said. The Vice President of St Benedict’s Campus, Dr Fr Lawrence Arockiaraj thanked the East Sepik Governor for coming up with such an initiative and for the trust in choosing the St Benedict’s campus for the live demonstration. “Students of St Benedict’s Campus shouldn’t have a problem accessing internet to order books once tertiary institutions are included in this e-library platform. This is because the Divine Word University provides internet quotas for all its students wherever they are in the country and those here in Wewak are no exception,” Dr Fr Lawrence pointed out. According to the developer of this e-library platform Jaive Smare, winner of the 2019 Kumul Startup Hero Award and also known through his Jaivmarket.com website, the e-Library should be effective as of this month for Grades one to twelve students to access curriculum and library books and slowly move into accommodating that of tertiary institutions. “The beauty of this is that it eliminates all middle men. Students can get whole books at an unlimited rate so long as they are connected to the internet and better yet, they can access books anywhere on the phones or laptop devices that they’ve used to sign up and log in to with,” said Mr Smare who has spent time in California’s Silicon valley, home to the world’s largest technological companies like Google, Apple etc. According to Governor Allan Bird, his government is looking at striking up a commercial deal with one of the internet providers in the country at a reasonable rate so that Primary and Secondary schools can access free internet with costs taken care of by the East Sepik Provincial Government. Governor Bird added, that his government will use the information that each student uses to sign up and log in to the e-Library to keep track of how many students from which schools in which parts of the province are making use of this privilege and producing results.
