![]() PAPUA New Guinea University of Technology vice chancellor Dr Ora Renagi says science and research institutions in the country need to know the government’s priorities to incorporate its strategies. “Once the strategies are right with the government’s priorities, institutions will deliver the required knowledge and skills to work with the government in building up our economy,” Dr Renagi said. “We have to identify and implement strategies that will address (government’s initiatives) at the institution level.” Speaking during the commissioning of the Unitech analytical services laboratory for agricultural researches in Lae on Wednesday, Dr Renagi said: “We have to know the roles that higher institutions have to play to achieve that initiative. “That is why institutions have roles to provide quality training to enhance and develop wider knowledge and skills required that are essential for economy building.”
According to Dr Renagi, the huge potential to boosting the economy of this country is in agriculture and to develop that sector fully, we have to harness science and technology in line with government structure. “This will then boost people’s efforts in the agriculture sector,” he said. “It is good to know that the Government is realising this and is supporting universities with their programmes that will go towards making agriculture sector a driver of the economy.” Pro vice-chancellor administration Prof Kaul Gena said the agriculture department of Unitech did not have a lab for a very long time and the commissioning of the current one was timely.
