SCHOOLS in Morobe are required to accommodate two extra periods each day and organise weekend classes, says programmer adviser Keith Tangui. Tangui said this was to make up for the classroom hours lost during the extended term one holidays. “We lost 1,400 hours for primary schools and 1,600 hours for secondary, technical and vocational education and training schools,” he said. “In my circular to head teachers and teachers, I’ve asked them to provide additional (home) work.”
Tangui said the lesson learnt last year when the school year was disrupted by the Covid-19 was the poor performance by students. “Many (classroom hours) were lost which led to many students not performing well,” he said. “So this is the approach this year to make up for those lost hours. “Parents’ consent must be sought (for) weekend classes (plus) two extra periods each day and additional homework for students.” Tangui also urged parents to support students at home by ensuring a quiet and study-conducive environment.
