![]() SCHOOLS in Enga will resume classes after all counting and declarations for the province are concluded, education adviser Lowatina Was says. “The situation in the province has worsened and it has become very risky for students to attend classes,” he said. Was said a secondary and a high school were destroyed with properties burnt to the ground. “The situation is hostile and although schools are expected to start classes for term three this week, we cannot risk their lives,” he said. He said counting for the province had not started so students were expected to remain at home until the situation improved. He said at the moment, some parts of roads had been blocked off, making it impossible for teachers and students to return to their schools.
“Postponing classes was not our decision however, the situation had given us no choice,” he said. Meanwhile, The National had received confirmation from other provincial education advisers (PEA) in East Sepik and New Ireland that schools would be taking an extra one week holiday due to election-related disturbances. East Sepik education manager said: “Teachers will resume on Monday, July 18, while students would be given a one week extension for safety purposes.” He said students should use the time wisely to prepare themselves, especially those who were in their examination years. PEA New Ireland Apelis Benson said: “Counting is continuing this week for both Namatanai and Kavieng Open so classes are delayed for a week but students are expected to return on Monday, July 25.” Education Minister Jimmy Uguro had advised that all schools must resume classes on the date as per the Education secretary circular instruction number 2022 without using the election as an excuse to delay classes. “Schools that are being used as counting venues should be reported to election authorities so changes can be made to allow students to attend classes.” The National / PNG Education News Next : Schools In PNG Facing Disruption Due To Elections Comments are closed.
