SCHOOL fees for 2014 for public schools have been approved by the National Education Board.
In a notice this week the Education secretary Michael Tapo announced that the National Education Board decided to increase the National Government’s tuition fee component by 10 per cent to further relieve parents of their difficulties in providing for their families in light of the devaluation of the kina and the high inflation rate.
For instance, in 2013 the National Education Board’s maximum fee limit for elementary prep to elementary two was K100. With the 10 per cent inflation this year, the total government contribution is K110.
Other rates will increase as well: primary grade 3-8 will rise from K270 to K297; lower secondary 9-10 day from K900 to K990; lower secondary 9-10 boarder from K1500 to K1650; vocational day will rise from K900 to K990; vocational boarding from K1300 to K1430; upper secondary day from K990 to K1089; upper secondary boarding from K1500 to K1650; and FODE from K100 to K110.
The tuition fee will be delivered in two installments over the year.
Mr Tapo also said the National Education Board agreed to give recognition to all Papua New Guinean children attending approved permitted schools as well as those attending Special Education Resource Centres.
Every child attending approved permitted schools will receive a one off payment of K100 and every disabled child will receive a one-off payment of K200.
The board also saw the importance of schools having a conducive learning environment and has agreed that schools with the approval of the provincial education boards can charge a fee of up to K200.
Mr Tapo said no schools are allowed to charge more than K200.
On 2014 selection results, all parents and guardians are advised to check their schools for their children’s selection results.
