A REVIEW of processes regarding teachers’ salaries and entitlements is necessary to put matters relating to their welfare to rest, Public Service Minister Elias Kapavore says. He told The National that he needed to first discuss the review with Education Minister Nick Kuman and Secretary Dr Uke Kombra. The review will focus on recurring issues such as the annual leave fares for teachers. According to figures from the Teaching Service Commission, there are about 56,000 teachers in the country, making up the biggest portion of the civil service. Kapavore said the commission was really the body that should be addressing issues regarding the welfare of teachers.
“The Teachers’ Service Commission is in charge of teachers – their salaries, entitlements, and making sure that teachers are employed,” he said. “Given the fact that they comprised the largest numbers in terms of workforce in the public service, it’s a matter that I have to talk to the commission, Education minister and secretary.” He said the concerns raised by teachers should be discussed again at the Government level with a view to establishing a new process. “It’s a topic of discussion that can be referred to those responsible,” he said. “The process of them waiting till end of the year for leave entitlements seems not to be working anymore. “My observation is that it’s time to review the arrangements for the payment of leave entitlements.” The National
