![]() HEALTH and Education sectors in Papua New Guinea remain core pillars to the nation's development and Marape/Basil Government continues to support these sectors; according to Higher Education, Research, Science & Technology and Sports Minister, Wesley Raminai. "Successive governments have prioritized these two key sectors and my government (Marape/Basil government) continues to see the importance and will continue to support in the upcoming national budget appropriations," Minister Raminai said. Minister Raminai was speaking during his visit to Kundiwa last Saturday to officiate and witness the opening of Kundiwa Nursing College and its first batch of pioneer graduands. "I see the establishment of this fine nursing college in Kundiawa Gembogl is a testament of the Simbu people excelling higher in education."
He commended Member for Kundiwa and Police Minister, Willie Onguglo Gogi and Chimbu Governor Michael Bogai Dua for the foresight in the human resource development. "We all look upon your provincial government for prudent management and administrative practice and such graduation today will enable the graduates to contribute in the workforce of Simbu province. "As Minister responsible for higher education, where all education and training component falls under, I will support any institution that comply to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Core Values," Minister Raminai said. With the passing of the Higher and Technical Education Reform Act 2020, Raminai said DHERST will become responsible for the regulatory oversight of highly state funded Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) once a transfer of date is completed fully. He said a National Government Gazettal will be out soon regarding this. Minister Raminai also announced that some public colleges and institutions will be transferred by the end of June 2021 from Department of Education to Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST). "This is a significant step to attain good governance, build good relationships with industries and above all respond to MTDPs and Vision 2050." The Minister congratulated the first batch of 28 pioneer graduands and encouraged them to advance their studies further. "There have been challenges in acquiring relevant skills and knowledge, staffing issues, COVID-19, School fees, and many others we have faced, Kundiawa College of Nursing and its students have continued to stay on for three (3) solid years until today." He told the graduands that "today you must know that the skills you have attained should equip you to define the destiny of our lives. These skills are vital to build family units, villages, provinces and country". "I encourage you to advance your studies further. You can do your postgraduate studies, Masters or PhDs and the process to get there, you have already started. All you have to do is believe in yourself, willing to make sacrifices and move on." Raminai also congratulated the College Board, the Principal and the staff for building and strengthening this institution. "It is through your efforts that we are witnessing the successful pioneer graduates in Nursing." Those present during the occasion were Kundiwa MP and Minister for Police, Willie Onguglo, Simbu Governor Michael Dua, Jiwaka Governor, William Tongamp, Finance Minister Sir John Pundari and members of the provincial assembly and the College Board Members.
