![]() By Robert Iki Leso Over the past years, we have talked and debated much on quality education to no avail. Previous and current governments have thought that quality education can be nourished others means. Like declaring free education or concentrating on the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Education. They actually assumed that by concentrating on these levels of education, they would uplift the standards of education. How wrong their assumptions were. With such notions we tend to give less priority to basic education. Basic or Early ChildhoodEducation is the foundation and the building block of a child’s education which we always give low priority.
We allow dropouts to teach the Early Childhood Education. We have never sent those teachers to a better and well established institution to be trained. That is how our Outcome Based Education failed big time and it has become painful, costly and a headache to correct the process. We allow our Primary, Secondary and Tertiary institutions to be taught by highly qualified professionals. However, we allow dropouts to mess up and destroy the clean slate of our young brains without repair from the beginning. These children are not prepared well to meet the tough environment at the higher levels of education and workplace. They are simply sent there messed up, confused and still struggling to understand basic and advanced concepts. Our Elementary Teachers have been the victims of a rushed and cooked up system. In the process of teaching the children, they confuse them with haphazard, trial-and-error pedagogies. Whatever that has been messed up at the Early Childhood Education takes a long time to be corrected. That is the reason why we have problems with Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions. They are faced with the realities of unending errors and omissions found in their articulations in written and spoken knowledge. Now, if we are dead serious in resurrecting quality education, we need to aggressively empower Early Childhood Education. Look at the education systems in Japan, United States of American, Australia and New Zealand. They prioritize Early Childhood Education. The prosperity of a nation reflects the quality of education they embrace. We need to rethink and correct our education system. Firstly, we need to start with infrastructure. We need to build Early Children Education centers in all the Council Wards in an Electorate. We need to have a custom designed buildings to accommodate classrooms, play facilities, cafeteria, toilets, sports facilities, boarding and lodging for teachers and even computer facilities. Secondly, we should design curriculum and syllabuses that emphasis Manners that stresses on values to respect for elders, obey instructions, work hard and others. It should also involve the indoctrination of Godly and Spiritual Values to enhance their manners and values. On top of that, Basic Numeracy, Basic Literacy and Basic Computer skills must be taught. Thirdly, every Early Childhood Education teacher must be trained to a degree level. They should attain Bachelors in Early Childhood Education. Their terms and conditions must be improved to ensure they do the job well and raise well educated children to move up the education levels. To destroy poverty and inequality amongst the children, Early Childhood Education must be given free education. That includes full set of uniforms including shirts, skirts, shoes, trousers, bags and stationeries including tablets that contain all their learning applications. After setting up a well-established basic education system, we can be in a better position to decide how many Primary and Secondary Schools we can build in an Electorate. When you do not have well established basic education system, you cannot go around pledging to building high and secondary schools. Where will the students come from to attend high or secondary schools that you build without appropriate projections? You may say this is ambitious and unrealistic but what else do you expect when you are desperate for a quality basic education for your children? We cannot politicize, fake and caricature education. It is the backbone, lifeblood and the catalyst for the prosperity of a nation. With a poor, cheap and deteriorating education system, you expect your children to be foreigner, servant and a slave in their own land. We are talking vision here. It does not need money to accomplish this. You are still confused when I say that because most of you believe too much in money. And still being driven crazy for the 46 years after independence without achieving anything tangible but only fake projects with the waste of money. If all young generation are reading this article, we need to join our hands and make this kind of vision come to reality. If our fathers have failed and fooled us with sweet talks, free bucks only to feed the toilet, make it happen in 2022. To implement such vision is nothing, but to win a seat is difficult for an honest, hardworking, genuine and God-fearing leader because of lies, corruption, and money-hungry voters! If all young people can unite and understand the truth, corruption, lies and bad legacy will be history come 2022 and beyond!
