ASSISTANT Commissioner of Police Sylvester Kalaut says there is a need to incorporate psychology into police training to lessen rate of police brutality and use of force on the public.
He said this during the graduation of 16 police members after a week-long firearms training last Friday at Bomana Training College. The training was initiated by the Police Commissioner Gari Baki to improve policing for the public to have confidence and trust with police members. Mr Kalaut, who is in charge of NCD command division, said police continue to be criticised in the media about police brutality, this was because of the mindset which needed to be addressed. The the use of force and police brutality were psychological issues. "It is the human factor causing destructions. We cannot blame police members but address the mindset. Everything we do come out as a result of reasoning," he said. He said the police would liaise with University of Papua New Guinea psychology lecturers to assist in the psychological aspect at the next firearms training which would be funded by the NCD command division. He acknowledged Bomana College commandant Perou N’Dranou for a successful training and appealed to the graduates to take pride in their career in serving their country. "You have to be smart, presentable when serving public out there. Maintain personal discipline that will show reputation of Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary," Mr Kalaut said.
