![]() A TEACHER at Vatugoro Primary School in Rigo, Central, says the increase in the prices of goods has been a burden for people in the country. Dulcie Taisu said this had put more pressure on citizens to provide for daily needs especially those living in the rural areas. “Those in the rural areas are experiencing a double or triple of the increased prices in urban centres,” she said. “As a working class person serving in a rural area, I tend to rely more on locally grown food than from shops.” However, she said that this had also led to seeing market goods becoming too expensive.
Meanwhile, a market vendor Jacklyn Poiya confirmed that most people could not really afford the high cost of basic items. “We are doing little markets for our families and seeing the increase in food prices just puts more pressure on some of us. “Sometimes we cannot afford the high prices of goods but because we are struggling to survive, we just accept and purchase the basic needs, regardless of the high prices.” She said those with no formal employment and with large families would be under most pressure. “Life would be easier if the prices were to decrease so that more people could afford to have a decent living standard,” she said. According to Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) chief executive officer Paulus Ain his office was monitoring price trends and movements in the markets to ensure that businesses did not unnecessarily increase prices. “What is happening at the moment is an inflationary issue that we are managing and has nothing to do with price control,” he said. “Price control is what we have been doing over the past years and we are well aware of controlling that but inflation is the problem that we are facing. “However, we are trying to ensure that businesses are not taking advantage of things and increasing prices unnecessarily. “We just have to make sure that businesses comply.” TheNational/PNGEducationNews Also read Comments are closed.
