Samuel Hovis, from Kabiufa village in Eastern Highlands, has always dreamt of becoming a police officer while growing up. He did grades 9 to 12 at Kabiufa Seventh-day Adventist Secondary. Not continuing further to college did not stop Hovis from getting to his dream after high school. He upgraded his grade 12 marks at the Department of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) at Goroka Secondary in 2007 and then applied for the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary recruitment later that year but didn’t make it. From 2008 to 2017, Hovis still worked hard at getting closer to his dream. All the way, life was a roller coaster as he described. ![]() PNG TEACHERS Savings and Loans Society (Tisa) yesterday announced K23 million in additional bonus interest to be paid to members. Chairman Gabriel Tai said Tisa members could immediately access their money using the YumiCard. “Members who do not have a YumiCard are advised to apply for a card at their nearest Tisa branch,” he added. Highlighting the 2021 financial performance, Tai said after another challenging year, the Tisa Group was pleased to announce a audited net profit of K61 million. Enga education director Lowatina Was said this was due to the recent burning down of a dormitory at the Porgera Secondary School. “That was a tough decision that the education division had to make to ensure that students did not miss out on lessons,” he said. He said the students were sent to reside there due to shortage of rooms. ![]() A UNIVERSITY of Technology (Unitech) student in Papua New Guinea Lae’s Taraka was stabbed when more than 30 men raided the girls’ dormitory on Friday, local police commander Chief Superintendent Chris Kunyanban says. “The intruders broke into Unitech’s Rainforest Habitat dormitory and robbed the students of their valuables and laptops. “The student was stabbed with a pocket knife when she tried to call out for help,” he added. Kunyanban said the robbers climbed the fence to gain access to the dormitory. ![]() THE Institute of Business Studies University (IBSU) recently hosted its second graduation since it’s recognition as a university by the Government. The university graduated 149 students – 118 from the IBSU and 31 from the Southern Cross University on May 6. IBSU chancellor Gabriel Pepson said: “Although the IBSU is the youngest university in the country, we have tried to ensure students receive the best tertiary education, especially in business courses to prepare them for the future.” Pepson said it was a major achievement for the graduating batch and also an achievement for the nation. “Education is a key catalysts for any development in any country, this is why countries that are successful are those that deliberarly invested in education,” he said. ![]() GRADUATES intending to apply for the Steamships graduate development programme (GDP) must be always eager to learn new things, says Steamships corporate head chief accountant Mary Vagi. Mary, who was in the 2016 accounting pathway in the GDP, said: “What I enjoyed most about the programme, is the mentoring and training. “I have learned a lot from working with different people during my rotations.” Insurance officer Kerrian Barilla, who also was part of the GDP, said: “What I enjoyed the most in the graduate programme is having the opportunity to rotate around different companies within Steamships, by learning and understating how each business operates, the different work ethics, cultures and management styles and, of course, meeting new colleagues and managers that helped me build my professional network. MORE than 70,000 Papua New Guinea Teacher’s Association members will benefit from a housing scheme to improve teacher accommodation that has been a perennial issue.
