Next : PNG Government To Offer FODE Through Existing Secondary And High Schools A FEMALE employee of Divine Word University in Madang has been arrested and charged with misappropriation and false pretence for allegedly stealing a sum of K426,587 belonging to the university. Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the suspect was released on K3,000 bail because she had a four-month old baby. He said the woman was working as a data entry officer and accounts payable officer at the university at the time she was alleged to have committed the offence. PNG Prime Minister James Marape, MP, has given more information on the Government’s plans to bring Flexible Open Distance Education (FODE) right next door to people all over the country. He gave the additional information to the people of National Capital District’s Gerehu Suburb when he attended the ground breaking ceremony for the upgrade of the Gerehu Drive Road to a four-lane road that will connect to the Nigibata Road. “Facilities for FODE will be opened in existing secondary and high school institutions around the country,” Prime Minister Marape said. “We want to give you that second chance to get the education you deserve, therefore, the Government will be providing the FODE materials for free. Over 17,000 Grade 12 students from secondary schools and national high schools nationwide will miss out on placings at tertiary institutions for 2021. Only 9,371 grade 12 students have been selected and are eligible to proceed onto tertiary institutions out of 27, 143 students that sat for the National Grade 12 examination for 2020. In total, 17,772 students have been denied a space, a slight drop from last years figures of 18, 318. THE University of Goroka (UOG) aims to ensure every teacher has a first degree in teaching and promoting quality education in the country, an official says. UOG highlands open campus director Hugo Kop made the remarks recently at the closing of a four-week Lahara class conducted by the university to train primary school teachers in the region. Kop told the teachers from Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Enga and Southern Highlands to be committed. THE Southern Highlands government has invested over K20 million in technical vocational education training (Tvet) giving a second chance to school leavers, governor William Powi says.
He said during the graduation of 30 students in driving and business courses at Mapex Training Institute in Port Moresby last Tuesday. “My efforts to create innovative opportunities for them had been shattered by violence following 2017 general election and the massive 7.5 magnitude earth quake that shook my province on Feb 26, 2018,” Powi said. Kara said parents and sponsors were the important partners for student’s achievement. “Students are able to attend basic business management and multi-trade skills through our sponsorship partners,” he said. FORTY-SEVEN-year old Andrew Andakit from Dei, Western Highlands, was the recipient of the 46th Highlands Agricultural College (HAC) dux and principal’s award last Thursday in Mt Hagen. Andakit was among about 130 graduates that received post certificate diploma in tropical agriculture, certificate in tropical agriculture – farming and certificate in agribusiness operational skills. The journey of the father of eight was exemplified by many wonderful experience in the agricultural sector and demonstrated resilience, forging ahead with his passion for agriculture. EDUCATION secretary Dr Uke Kombra has announced the academic year and national examination dates so parents and guardians can prepare well for their children’s education. Dr Kombra said the announcement would ensure that the parents, guardians, Government departments, business houses, churches and non-government organisations plan their activities.
