![]() The Port Moresby General Hospital says it believes the deaths of four patients after undergoing surgery recently, were related to the administration of a batch of anaesthetics. Among them was a 14-year-old boy. The hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paki Molumi, says there will be an independent investigation, sanctioned by Health Minister Jelta Wong. The news of the deaths at the country's biggest referral hospital has come as a shock and disappointment to the family and the public. Dr Molumi met with the four grieving families, whose lives have been sadly impacted by the death of a loved one following the surgery. Dr Molumi says the paramount responsibility of the hospital is to save lives and what had transpired last week was shocking not only for the family and public but the hospital staff as well. Dr Molumi says an independent investigating Committee with clear terms of reference will be sanctioned by Health Minister Jelta Wong. The terms of the Reference will be directed towards identifying the root causes, in order to clearly establish the exact cause of deaths. He says PMGH will ensure the investigation is thorough and independent to assist bring closure to the cases.
