![]() POLITICIANS in PNG must stop meddling in the appointment of teachers and leave that task to the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) and education divisions, says commission chairman Samson Wangihomie. “I do not want politics. I am requesting politicians not to meddle in teacher appointments, ”he said. “That (is the job of the) education division and TSC. “We are getting all sort of stories from Jiwaka (of people playing politics about teachers’ appointments.” Wangihomie was responding to general complaints by teachers in the Highlands region about politicians trying to intervene in their appointments. He advised politicians to stick to their roles and responsibilities and leave the task of appointing teachers to the education authorities “who will appoint teachers on merit”.
Teachers resumed work on Monday, Jan 23. Classes proper began on Monday this week. Meanwhile, Wangihome thanked the provincial education boards for ensuring that teachers resumed work on time. “I wish to commend the teachers and the provincial education boards for ensuring that they resumed on time last week. “Many have settled in and working,” he said. Wangihomie urged teachers not happy with how they had been treated to raise their complaints with the TSC. He assured them that the TSC would assess their situations to see whether appointments were made on merit. “We have to see and make a decision along that line,” he said. Wangihomie also clarified that if a teacher was moved from a substantive to another, they could “take up the position. Or if they wish not to, take leave without pay”. In the case of the appointment of a teacher with a lower qualification instead of one with a higher qualification, “the most suitable person to be appointed would be the person with a higher qualification”. Wangihomie urged teachers to take their cases up with the TSC to decide on them. He also warned teachers not to turn away students from class for any non-payment of fees as they could be charged with insubordination followed by disciplinary action.
