EIGHT new executives of the PNG Teachers Association (PNGTA) Eastern Highlands branch were challenged to continue fighting for teachers’ rights by an official. Outgoing former Eastern Highlands PNGTA branch president Branson Tomane urged the new executives to work to improve the welfare of teachers. Tomane said he had taken up the teachers’ cause with the Eastern Highlands provincial government for the last 15 years. The occasion was witnessed by National PNG Teachers Association president Aita Sanagekepe along with family members of the new executives. PNGTA vice-president Sine Kou said the association was a registered union under the Labour Department operating under a constitution.
He said every province had a PNGTA branches looking after the welfare of teachers but Eastern Highlands had operated without branch executives for over 15 years. The swearing in was held in Goroka yesterday with Magistrate Felix Terra presiding over the ceremony at the St Paul’s Lutheran Church. The executives sworn in were Mike Tapio, Aure Kaupa, Zovanu Yarige Owaka, Steven Weimb, Benson Tobio, Francisca Kuman Kosuwai, Jim Jujumo and Julie Mark .
