![]() Five Papua New Guinea nationals were convicted and fined $200 after pleading guilty to failure to comply with a lawful order in Fiji. The University of the South Pacific students, Junior Kimbu, 24, Bentley Colin, 23, Dwayne Kainju Koroka, 21, Baufi Hazame, 22, and Brandon Nii, 22, were produced at the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday. The group, who were found before 7pm drinking alcohol at a house in Raiwaqa on April 6, were in violation of the prohibition of social gathering. The prohibition on social gathering was announced by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, who said this was necessary for the protection of the public from COVID-19. Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne questioned the men whether they preferred to pay a fine to the Court or be subjected to a minimum of 20 hours community service. All five accused opted to pay a fine. Accordingly, Magistrate Somaratne convicted them for the offence as charged and sentenced them to pay a fine of $200 within one month or face 20 days imprisonment in default. Their case has been adjourned to May 6th for review and they have been released on a $500 bail bond each.
