The Australian defence force (ADF) supported defence cooperation programme (DCP) continues to support capacity building within the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) through sponsoring of education for personnel. Three officers, from the PNGDF’s Engineering Battalion stationed in Lae’s Igam Barracks, were the most recent beneficiaries of the partnership between the PNGDF and ADF. Lt-Col John Wani, commanding officer of the PNGDF Engineering Battalion was among the three who graduated from the University of Technology (Unitech) on April 5. The other two were Lt Philip Tiye and L/Cpl McDonald Bents.
Lt-Col Wani, who is from Kamanimbit village in Angoram, East Sepik, graduated with his second master’s degree in urban and regional planning. His first master’s was in remote sensing and geographical information systems with which he also graduated from Unitech in 2017. Both masters’ programmes were sponsored by the DCP. Lt-Col Wani thanked the DCP for their continued support to the PNGDF in building the capacity of its soldiers. “I’d like to especially thank the Australian government and its taxpayers through the programme for making this dream a reality,” he said. He also thanked the PNGDF, the Engineering Battalion and his family for their perseverance. Lt Tiye and L/Cpl Bents both graduated with bachelors from Unitech; Lt Tiye with a degree in mechanical engineering while L/Cpl Bents with a degree in electrical engineering. The programmes of study for both were also sponsored by the DCP. Lt-Col Wani said graduating was a milestone for himself and his two fellow servicemen.
