![]() THE country’s premier universities are owed about K51.4 million in unpaid bills under the tertiary assistance scholarship scheme (Tesas). Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (Dherst) acting secretary Fr Jan Czuba said Minister Don Polye had written numerous letters to Treasury to release the funds but to no avail. Czuba said of the total amount, the department was yet to pay the University of Technology about K4 million, University of Natural Resources and Environment K2.2 million, Divine Word University K4,088,060, K4.3 million for the University of Goroka and University of Papua New Guinea K4 million. He said the remainder constituted what was owed to another 43 higher learning institutions, especially colleges.
Yesterday, Unitech student representative council president Christopher Igudu said the news that they would be refused entry next year was not good. Igudu said most parents and students relied on the Tesas component to put them through the universities. “We are calling on the Government through the relevant departments such as Dherst, Treasury and Finance to clarify to the students what their positions are on this matter. “Government accounts will soon close; come clear and tell us what steps these departments have taken to rectify this issue,” Igudu said.
