THE suspension of teachers who collected project fees was done following a formal process, Education Minister Nick Kuman says. Kuman, pictured, was responding to people criticising the suspension of some head teachers from schools in Chimbu. He clarified yesterday that the suspension was done according to the Education and Teaching Commission Acts. “We have look at it very clearly in a more professional way, making sure that we follow the process. “That’s what we are doing they are saying that the secretary does not have the power. “I’m the minister responsible and I have the power under both acts. “That doesn’t mean I go and suspend every teacher in this country. But it means that secretary’s directive in terms of instructions and policies of the Government or under the Act. “The teachers are required to follow the Act. Those are lawful directives.” Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra said: “Some of our teachers and principals have defied instructions that were given. “We have to make sure the policies of the Government are being implemented. “So yes there are few who are being suspended over the last weeks. “We have due process in place, the secretary or minister don’t go into the classroom and suspend teachers.” He said there were process in place that the Teaching Service Commission followed. “There are certain acts and commissions that allows for any teachers that does things that are unlawful or not good in the interest of children or school. “But they can be suspended but the suspension comes through the investigation.” He said everything was under control and schools had gone into their fourth week of classes. He said the rest of first quarter tuition fee free funds would be paid this week to other institutions as all primary and secondary schools received theirs last week. The National/PNGEducation News
