Papua New Guinea EDUCATION secretary Dr Uke Kombra has issued warning on cheating in the National Examinations. “Examinations should be fair for all students,” Dr Kombra said. “There should be no cheating and we must be very careful to make sure there is fairness in the exams. “We extended the examination from the normal dates which allows time for teachers and students to catch up with the lessons that were missed and we are looking forward to students sitting the exams in a fair manner. “With cheating, we have devised some systems in the examination process to address that. People are always looking at ways of trying to cheat or try to buy or sell exam questions and my encouragement and advice to students is don’t do that to cheat,” he said. “If you are found cheating, the only penalty we will give is you are not going to be certified.
“No student and school will be certified if they are caught cheating.” Kombra said one school in Western Highlands last year, with about 400 students, was not certified because of cheating. “So we are ready to take any action,” he said. “My advice is work hard, study hard and do the exams and get the result of your hard work and not by cheating. “Cheating is stealing, you are lying to yourself. I don’t encourage anyone to be a part of this.” Kombra said the Covid-19 had affected students learning from the seven-nine weeks’ suspension and that was the biggest impact they’ve had in the history of the education system in the country. “Schools have to be suspended,” he said. “We’ve taken this step to show that the lives of our students are more important than education.” He wants parents and teachers to support their grade 10 children who are sitting for examinations. About 73,000 Grade students are sitting the examinations starting on Monday.
