THE Department of Works will revitalise its apprenticeship programme to train and upskill young technical staff in preparation to replacing the aging workforce and increase productivity. Works Secretary David Wereh said that
during a graduation at the Works apprenticeship certificate awarding event in Port Moresby last week. Wereh said the aim of the programme was to train young staff and increase the number of technical workforce in the Department to promote efficient service delivery in the country. “We need more skilled human resources in the country to deliver effective and lasting services. “If the government can see this need, we can join hands to train and upskill our local staff so they can replace the aging workforce. Otherwise, we will import technical staff from overseas and that will be a very expensive exercise. “We want to see plant and transport division (PTD) revitalise and fully commercialise the programme because it is sustainable and accessible to mobilise services to our people, which means we will require people to manage engineering equipment in all our districts,” Wereh said. He said the department would be looking at a restructure programme to replace aging staff. He said the Works Department would retire more than 70 workers at the end of the year. The apprenticeship certificate awarding event saw 14 Works technical staff from different provinces receiving certificates in motor vehicle mechanic and auto electrical. The programme was abolished in 1994 following the National Executive Committee’s decision to lay off workers. It was reintroduced in 2010. The programme will receive full funding starting next year from the PTD under the department of human resources development (HRD) and will be made an ongoing programme. Senior apprenticeship training coordinator Naime Dai said the apprenticeship training was a milestone achievement for the department, considering that the programme had been abolished for more than 15 years. Great "News" that the apprenticeship training programme has been reintroduced and the Newtown Training Centre is operational again. After all any "Tradeperson"is a "Backbone" of the Nation.I wish the Department success in the endeavour,as I was a "Small" part of apprenticeship training at the Newtown Training Centre in 1978/79 and 1982/87.Well done Naime Dai. 12/9/2015 04:40:57 pm

This is great, very important and outstanding to the future of PNG in terms of developing the human resource in the country if reintroduction of apprenticeship is put into ppractise in PNG by department of Works as He said. Its waste of money our Government sending students Over Seas wether for scholarship or for further studies. The knowledge that they going to gain in what kind of technology or master degrees you have taken in Over Seas is perfectly do differences than one who is gaining in PNG. For example, A graduate Mechanical Engineer from Uniteach has exactly the same technology to do the same job as a graduate Mechanical Engineer from the Oxford University. Likewise to every Technological Schools graduates in the world. What we need is only best training facilities. We have the best Lectures in the country..So Our government should provide best training facilities rather than wasting funds sending students Over Seas. so it's So it's the best idea to reintroduce apprenticeship in the country in the department of Works. On top of that PNG government should take initiative to provide best training facilities to every schools in the country especially technical school.....Andrias k Don Bosco Technical Institute graduate in Electrical technology. Please if you taking in my trade for apprenticeship training, please don't estate to call me on my digicel number 73313265...
