![]() A TEAM of United States Embassy officials visited the Divine Word University’s Friendship Library for a site inspection earlier in this month. The team consisting of cultural affairs assistant Lazarus Towa, IT manger Elvis Yakopa and resource coordinator Natasha Bodger visited the library to set up the American Corner at the facility. The US embassy officials were met by the library services director Nathan Kwasam and partnership division director Salome Yegiora and were shown the space allocated for the American Corner to be set up. Kwasam said the space allocated to the American corner used to be the old internet hub which already had the necessary connections and cabling. He said the space was also easily accessible.
“The initiative by the partnership division is to connect with external stakeholders for the purpose of promoting DWU courses and programmes in alignment with the objectives of the university,” he said. “Through such partnership with the US government through the US embassy, we can be a part of promoting American culture and scholarships and any subject of interest on America.” American-style community centres (American corners) are located in libraries and other public spaces in other tertiary institutions in the region and operate through joint partnerships to promote cooperation and understanding between the people of the US and PNG, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
