![]() Parents and guardians have been asked to assist schools and teachers to ensure their children recover lessons missed in the five weeks by completing extra lessons given to them. That's the appeal by Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra on Thursday, as a panellist speaking at a CIMC organized forum on the impacts of COVID-19 and SOE on citizens. Dr Kombra says the education department has issued an instruction to all schools to have additional periods or extra hours from term two to term three as a way to recover lessons missed. But faced with the challenge of social distancing, schools are implementing different strategies in the new normal, some are taking one grade a day, some take half class in the morning and half in the afternoon whilst some are giving lessons for students to take home. Hence, the education Secretary says with such arrangement in the new normal, it will require cooperation from parents and guardians to ensure their children do the extra work. Meanwhile, Mrs Bernadette Ove, Principal of Jubilee Secondary School in NCD, says many schools and parents in NCD have raised concerns on whether or not they can recover lessons missed in the five weeks, and especially if their students sitting for national examinations will be prepared in time for the exams. She says teachers are faced with the challenge of whether or not they can cover all the required lessons that will captured in the examinations. On that note he thanked the Education department for moving back the Written Expression Exam, which will give enough time for teachers to prepare the students. But Dr Kombra says life has to be adjusted to the new normal and schools will have to adjust and that will require the help from parents.
