A community in Western Highlands has come to the aid of teachers who have been taken off the payroll and donated food, fuel and money to allow them to continue classes.
The Hap Wara community in Nebilyer made their donations on Tuesday at the newly established Lower Nebilyer Provincial High School. Seven teachers at the school were taken of the payroll because of administration issues. The Hap Wara community were known for tribal fighting back in the 1970s. Western Highlands Governor Paias Wingti helped establish the school at Taplga village in 2016. Last week, parents from the Epelga community donated food and diesel to the teachers and the school. Epelga Eli-Galga ward councillor John Mek made a commitment to supply 12 litres of fuel to the school. On Tuesday, the people from Kutka and Mindimp made their donation of food, diesel and K350 in cash to support the teachers. Mek said: “We will be taking full responsibility of the school’s and staff because this is our only hope of a better future.” School principal Nickson Miti thanked the community for coming to the aid of the teachers. “I have never heard of people giving to the government and the steps they took shows that these people are willing to see a better future,” Miti said.
