PAPUA New Guinea is expected to send close to a thousand students next year to study in TAFE Queensland colleges according to visiting TAFE representative. Mark McCarthy, TAFE Queensland International regional manager for South Asia, India, Nepal, PNG and the Pacific, who is in the country said PNG is one of the top five source countries that is expected to send their students to study in Queensland as of 2016. “The student numbers from PNG is just going up year after year and I’ve come back to Port Moresby to hold further discussions with the Department of Higher Education and also with groups representing Bougainville and Central Southern Highlands as well as with other prominent people representing the education sector,” McCarthy said. He said part of his week-long visit apart from strengthening relations, marketing ideas and study options to stakeholders, is to announce that TAFE Queensland has merged to become one international team. “With myself representing this part of the world and my colleagues representing Europe and Latin America, I think this will open doors for young people in PNG and also to teachers and other staff with greater opportunities in collaboration for exciting projects that could also be implemented in Australia or here in PNG in securing world class education for students wishing to study in a TAFE Queensland campus,” McCarthy said. “International students studying in TAFE Queensland join more than thirty thousand Australian students in completing a variety of different courses mostly in industry, technical and vocational fields. “TAFE Queensland has established direct entry pathways to some of Queensland’s top universities due to the high standards of TAFE courses. “Students who successfully complete a diploma may obtain up to one year of credit towards a university degree program making university study shorter.” Both certificate and diploma courses are offered by TAFE with some study choices in health, tourism and hospitality, cookery, information technology, marine and business.
