The Gearson Solulu Scholarship funding to Niugini Plant and Heavy Equipment Training Institute (Npheti) in Lae would transform the lives of at least 240 students, an official says. Morobe education minister Lemson Gilangsaoc last week toured the institute while students were doing their practical in operating a forklift, crane, excavator and lightweight vehicle following their theory short courses. Gilangsaoc spent time with the students and learnt that most were unfortunate and couldn’t complete their education – the youngest student being 17 year old and the oldest being 65 year old. He was also impressed to find 10 female students. “These courses positively change our people’s lives and we are happy to provide the opportunity,” he said.
“K280, 000 scholarship funding has already been given with K700,000 yet to be paid. “I will present a report of my findings to the provincial executive council to ensure that they fund the outstanding.” Npheti founder, director and lead trainer Kone Angima said the short courses ran for two months, two weeks and had close partnership with Manti Ltd, Associated Builders and Contractors and Ninziang Ltd, for students’ hands-on training. He thanked the Morobe government for considering Npheti under the GSS programme, despite this being the institute’s first year in Morobe. Npheti was registered under the National Training Council in 2014 and was first established in Alotau in 2015, then branched out to Kavieng and Port Moresby. Angima planned to expand into the districts of Morobe, depending on the partnership with the provincial government. “We want to be transparent with the funding thus the education chairman’s visit,” he said. “We will try to seek an arrangement with the Government for a memorandum of understanding with mining companies so they can get our students for on-job trainings and create an employment pathway for them.” Statement/TheNational/PNGEducationNews Also read Comments are closed.
