Education Commentary By Michael Unage Independence celebrations over. Next concern for students and their parents is the final exam for grades 10 and 12. Despite being a difficult year, we wish them all the best and hope they perform well. I have seen notices of coaches trying to assist students, especially in some subject areas. This is commendable. On the other hand, one school has offered lucrative prices, if their students reached the top 100 positions in the national exam rating, even a vehicle for the top 3 positions. However, personally I have reservations on such enticement. In such a situation facing students, some of us wish that the examination committee should relax questions out of fear that the majority may score well below average. This wish might not be granted, as there are standard criteria in assessments. Given this situation, many parents would want to support their children in attending extra coaching classes. Yet doing too much too close to exam period can be stressful and ill-concieved. It might be contrary to its purported intention. Also just doing enough may not be satisfying and bring about apprehension to both students and parents. In this scenario, what do we do? First, I want to assure students to be confident. They have learnt many things over the last 9 to 11 years and it's all stored in the middle unconcious. Students have to believe that they have sufficient content knowledge of the subjects. We need to find a way to retrieve those information with less complications. This is a very important and intricate process. Another affirmation is that students have innate powers that would be useful is trying times. Applying the use of intuition and will power to manage critical situations and gather information and knowledge not normally stored in memory, and in this case, the fear that they have less content knowledge of the subjects. Students should be assist in accessing these powers which are in them. Avoiding distractions is something to be seriously considered. There are two issues. First is the states of consciousness. The focused attention is the desired state while sleepiness the undesired in the state of consciousness. Students should be assist with the practice of focused attention. The second is other content of consciousness such as habitual thoughts, bodily sensations, desire and wants, and the streams of consciousness itself that can drift focus and concentration. There are other exterior factors of distractions such as noise pollution, intake of alcohol and drug, peer gatherings, love experiences and contacts, and the urge and attachment to internet and social media. The consciousness needs to be free and controlled. It does not need to be bombarded and stressed out. Students should be assisted in creating inner file in their memory.. Without creating inner files, knowledge is stored like in a trash bin. It's long and frustrating to look for a thing you want in a trash bin. But looking for a document in a filing cabinet is easier and quicker. Students need to be assisted in creating inner files, like a filling cabinet. Parents and students should know that preparing for exam is not only a mind preparation. The whole psychosomatic composition should be put to action. Students need to be physically fit like eating well, not being ill, well rested, feeling fresh etc. They should be free from worries, undue stress, depression, anxiety and others unhelpful psychological states. Students, you don't have to have a high IQ to do well in exam. Any student can do well. Follow the above hints. A photocopier can do excellent copies when the machine is serviced regularly. When do you, as a student, gone for a psychosomatic inspection or service? The reason why I am posting this is that I have so far conducted 15 self-management clinics to young people for mindset change. Seven clinics were conducted in Bougainville, three in Simbu, one in Morobe, Enga, central, Southern Highlands, and Hela. In those clinics, people have changed because we allow participants to discover and employ inner faculties and powers to effect mindset and behaviour change. Therefore, students can be trained to be intelligent, they have what it takes to be intelligent and score high marks. You need mind disciplined to excel. Vovid 19 did distract and disrupted your studies. But believe that you have more in you to excel. Next : Joint Force College For Police, Defence And Correctional Services Comments are closed.
