![]() PARENTS and students should not blame the online selection system for missing out on places into tertiary institutions because the system is transparent, says an official. Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology secretary Fr Jan Czuba was responding to complaints by some parents and students regarding students who had good grades but missed out on selection. Fr Jan said students were given enough time to decide with their parents and guidance teachers on their choices. He said the department opened accounts for each students to have access all institutions of higher learning to find out what programmes were being offered, and what criteria were with the subject combinations.
Fr Jan said students were given a five-day grace period to change their choices and they also had access to their exam results. “On the other hand please be advised that GPA (grade average point) is not the only criteria we use. The institutions have their own criteria that are used and the students and parents are aware of that,” Fr Jan said. “GPA is one of them and subject combination is very important. Parents may say ‘my child had a very good GPA and didn’t get in’, but there are others who applied to the same programme who had better GPA or better marks.” He said the software was designed in a way that if the institution sets their criteria it selects the students according to the criteria. “So if somebody had better grades and was not chosen, it is because they put the wrong choices and also there are shortage of spaces at these institutions,” Fr Jan said. He said it was first time in the history of the country, after the selection they had 3,601 empty spaces because students were academically not eligible. Fr Jan said it was not good to blame the students or the system because the online selection was transparent and nobody could change it.
