Wantokism and nepotism continues to be an issue in selecting students at the universities including the University of Papua New Guinea.
Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Minister Pila Niningi revealed this in Parliament when asked to comment on the two sets of different selection of students attending the University of PNG, one by the university with their acceptance list and the other by the office of Higher Education made public in the media. Mr Niningi while responding to questions without notice from Nawae MP Kennedy Wenge who wanted Mr Niningi to explain why there were two sets of selection list for this year’s enrolment. He said after receiving complaints, the Secretary for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Fr Jan Czuba, went to the University of Papua New Guinea with the software list and met with the vice-chancellor and the deans to sort out the problem. Mr Niningi said the cross-examination found that the list of students selected by the university included students who did not qualify for universities and should not have been accepted. “Those who qualified to go to technical colleges were accepted at the university. Those selected online have a place to enter the universities, and they should be the ones to be enrolled and not the ones selected by the university,” he said. “We are fed up with wantok system and nepotism as it contributes to the downfall in the quality and standards of graduates,” he said. Mr Niningi called on the institutions to go by the OHE list and not from their own list. “I will make sure they stay there if they have been selected online,” he said. Meanwhile, several parents have also raised concerns that similar practice has been going on over the years as their children with high marks have been overlooked while those who had poor mark managed to enter the university. Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has called on the universities to be lenient on students fee, saying the office of Higher Education is looking introducing a subsidy scheme (a loan scheme) for students to access to pay for their school fee to be repaid over time when they find employment.

Only recently the acting Vice Chancellor of PNG raised concerns over the poor out put to medical school and law school. The poor performance is maybe due to the manner in which students who do not meet university criteria have been pushed in by wantoks or may have bribed their way in or may have used faults documents.
