NAWAEB Lutheran High School in the Morobe Province has been elevated to secondary school last Wednesday with the opening of two four-in-one classrooms and intakes of first Grade 11 students. The school also commissioned five staff houses for teachers and the principal last week to house heads of departments. Principal Besi Simongi said there had been much talk for Nawaeb to have its own secondary because many times students completing Grade 10 had been selected to do Grade 11 and 12 at Bumayong, Busu, Lae and Bugandi secondary schools. “Because of school fights, many of the students never make into the higher institutions with 50 per cent of them returning to their villages. “With my appointment in 2021, former Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge’s vision was to upgrade the school to a secondary status and for the last two years, we had been negotiating with concerned authorities in Port Moresby and the given green light last year,” he said. Simongi said he was excited to see the transition of Grade 10 students to Grade 11 as the main grading of the school had gone past 42 per cent, and he challenged his teachers to increase the percentage to 50-plus.
He said the Nawaeb development authority had funded the classrooms at K1.5 million with the first intakes of 73 students taking up classes in 2023, and also helped the school with another K1.1 million to complete the principle’s house and two duplexes to accommodate four staff. “The development authority will give K371,000 to build additional three duplexes for the staff. “The K12 million given to secondary and high schools in the province by the Morobe government, Nawaeb was the first to deliver the duplexes, and the Morobe Government has helped with another K200,000 to construct three bedroom executive houses that will start next week. “We also have 200-bed dormitories for female and male students currently under construction funded by the Morobe government that started last week and will be commissioned in three weeks’ time,” said Simongi. Morobe Governor Luther Wenge, who attended the event, said he had given K1.7 million to the school recently to start construction of two student dormitories. “The school will have a multi-purpose hall that is similar to that of Lae Secondary School, a chapel and some more staff houses,” he said. Wenge said school subsidy from elementary to Grade 12 will be paid by the Government. Morobe government is looking after the tertiary institution subsidies for students. Wenge said parents should make it their business to ensure their children were well looked after with uniforms, proper meals daily and other basic necessities.
