Over 1000 students from the Hagen Central district in Western Highlands Province conducted rallies, performed dramas, sung songs and read poems to observe the World Toilet Day last week. One of the notable schools that conducted a rally, Koge Namba Primary School with over 700 students led by the Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Edna Felix rallied around its community in awareness of building proper toilets and practising proper hygiene measures. The students marched to the community and returned to the school and concluded with performances of songs, dramas, and reading of poems. WASH project officers from Implementing partners Care International PNG in Mt Hagen, UNICEF, and Government partners from National Department of Health (NDOH), National Department of Education (NDOE) and Project Management Unit (PMU) from the National Planning and Monitoring were present to witness the occasion. Mr Ray Kangu from the National Department of Health appealed to students to use their toilets properly and look after the facilities. Mr Kangu also urged the students to keep the toilets clean as newly funded toilets under the European Union-UNICEF PNG Government WASH project was completed recently at the school and will be used soon by the 700 plus students in Koge Namba Primary School. Deputy Head Teacher Mrs Felix further appealed also to the members of the community who were present for the World Toilet Day celebrations to take back what they heard from the celebrations and take action in building proper toilets at their homes. Furthermore, Mrs Felix thanked the European Union, and UNICEF in funding the newly built facilities in at her school that has 5 toilets for female students including 1 female toilet for Persons with disabilities (PWD), 4 toilets for male students including 1 toilet for male students with disability and two toilets for teachers. Mrs Felix said the school is privileged to have these toilets that come with water taps in all toilet blocks including sato pans which will be a big boost for the students.
