DWU Journalism STUDENT Miss Divine Word University 2022 Kappa Goama has initiated her first community service project with students from tertiary institutions to help communities in Morobe. Kappa Gaoma said she started what she called the Pikinini Project to promote unity in higher institutions by delivering basic services to communities. They began in Lae by sponsoring the dux awards for Lae Secondary School and then visited the children’s ward at Lae Angau Memorial Hospital.
They also organised street feeding around the three main meeting points in Lae: Eriku, Market and Town. Their most recent endeavour was a visit to Busamang village, where they brought food and presented to the Lutheran Church. They were received by the pastor who was excited to give the food to the villagers. Gaoma said that some villagers had approached them, requesting medical supplies and teaching resources which they took note of and were now working on connecting with business houses to help them in providing these resources. “It may not be big but at least seeing the joy and hope that we have brought upon the people that we have visited so far is what’s keeping us going. “I am optimistic that nothing can limit my team and I from achieving our dreams of helping others,” she said. They were now planning on visiting inmates in Buimo and Boys Town Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre at Erap as their next assignments. They would then go to Menyamya with medical and food supplies to do awareness on basic hygiene practices for one’s home and body.
