MORE than 60 students from Papua New Guinea have been given an opportunity to complete medical studies in the country after undergoing studies in China, says an official. School of Medical and Health Sciences (SMHS) dean, professor Nakapi Tefuarani said the curriculum in China did not involve any clinical component, therefore, students had to study two more years in PNG to become certified medical practitioners. “Their curriculum does not involve any clinical component or touching patients, so to practice they have to come and study here in the country,” he clarified. He said as the chairman of the medical board, this was the first of its kind and instead of disappointing these students to practice in the country, they have allowed them to undergo two years of clinical practice.
“The government of China has made a policy that they can only study theory but cannot touch the practical components of the courses studied.” He said, they had to study this properly as safety of people was important. He said they had to touch patients to become doctors. “If they pass, they will graduate with a diploma in clinical and that will complete their training, so that the next step is for the board to exam them to be doctors in the country,” he explained. Tefuarani said, the students had settled in with the Medical Faculty and undergoing clinical practices. “This programme is for students studying all professions in the medical field, however the regulation is not in MedFac, it is the medical board.” He said, in order to keep up with the medical standards, they should take their clinical practices seriously.
