TAKING after her mother, Magdalene Edwina Owiti Webster walked down the podium with a Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery during the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) graduation on Friday. Her mother is the school of medicine and health sciences associate professor Florence Muga. “It has been my childhood dream to pursue a career in the medical fraternity, taking after my mother,” she said. “Little did I know; I would graduate one day with this achievement.” Her father, Dr Thomas Webster, is the former National Research Institute director. “I have been waiting for this moment for a long time with a lot of blood, sweat and tears and this achievement paid off,” Magdalene said. “I dedicate this achievement to my hardworking parents and family for their endless support, they deserve everything.” Magdalene’s aunty, Professor Elizabeth Bokosi, said: “I am so proud of my daughter for this great achievement and I look forward to more achievements from her.
“Women make a difference and change the world, every time you educate a woman, you are changing not just one person but the whole community.” Magdalene comes from Africa’s Kenya and Papua New Guinea’s Western Highlands. “My father’s family from Mt Hagen has been very supportive in my educational journey as well as my Kenyan side who flew all the way from Nairobi to attend my graduation,” she said. Magdalene attended Koroboro International School and continued to the St Joseph’s International Catholic College to do Grades Nine and 10. She then went to Brisbane, Australia, in 2016 to do Grade 11 and 12 and was selected to the University of Queensland to take science foundation.
