The Sumatin Enterprise Program has announced the winners of its annual writing competition for grade 12’s. The announcement was made during a private dinner hosted by the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Hon. James Marape for the ARoB SME Women delegation who had attended the inaugural SME Week in Port Moresby. In his brief to Prime Minister Marape and the Minister for Education Hon. Jimmy Uguro, Activity Director Andrew Runawery said that year 12 applicants were invited to write an expository essay on the ‘Opportunities and Challenges faced by Rural Entrepreneurship and Trade in their district or local area. The winning paper by Madang Christian Academy Year 12 science student Lesmiller Pawa featured the owners of Gauns Trading, Leo and Barbara Baig in Rempi village, North Coast Madang. Lesmiller wrote how the couple established their trade store from income generated by their coconut and betelnut trade. This is the second year in a row for the competition to declare winning papers outside of NCD. It is the first for Madang after Grace Memorial Secondary in Wau, Morobe claimed the title in 2020. “We were thrilled by the response and enjoyed reading the papers received. Entries were judged by a volunteer panel from the Education Services using a basic judging criteria with an eye for entrepreneurial content relevant to the theme and use of language and dialogue,” Runawery explained. “The Sumatin Enterprise Program will include grade 10’s and 8’s going forward to shift paradigms and to gravitate their comprehension to current entrepreneurial developments and issues.” The 2021 second placing was Mr. Gapenuoc Forgison from Malahang Secondary in Lae with his paper on News Land Coffee Association in Finschhafen District and third place was Miss. Sihem Kamako from POMIS in NCD with her paper on Women SMEs in Okapa, Eastern Highlands. He acknowledged BSP and the SME Corporation for sponsoring the Sumatin cash prize and the PNG Australia Partnership for sponsoring K12, 000 worth of ‘Bilum’ English Text Books and Business Studies Books which will go direct to Madang Christian Academy, Malahang Technical Secondary in Lae and POMIS through a shared value approach. Runawery thanked the Prime Minister and the Regional Member for Bougainville Hon. Peter Tsiamalili for availing time for Lesmiller who had flown in from Madang on Friday June 25 for the Breakfast with the PM and arrived when the program had ended at the APEC Haus.
