THE PNG Education Department is concerned that the increasing demand for quality education and any decline in the Government’s budget for education can affect the delivery of quality education in the country, a senior education officers conference in Wewak, East Sepik, was told. The education system which depends heavily on Government tuition fee subsidies for schools was discussed on the first day of the meeting. Department’s first assistance secretary financial services Camilus Kanau made a presentation that drew a lot of discussions including some frustrations by provincial education advisers on how much government subsidies were affecting schools. Kanau said the country’s economy was dependent on the world economy and the annual budget was economic-performance driven.
“The performance of our economy is reflected in the annual budget appropriated to implement key government policies and interventions including the Ministry of Education,” he said. Kanau said the department’s budget received a huge appropriation compared to other sectors, but as a school system grows, PNG’s per capita budget was experiencing a decline. The major component of the budget of the ministry was the tuition fee free and now the government tuition fee subsidies (GTFS) policy. “It is, therefore, important that all levels of governments work in partnership to ensure education services are adequately funded within the limited budgetary allocations under these levels of governments,” Kanau said. “It is important that each level of government look after certain sectors of the education in the country.” TheNational/PNGEducationNews Next : Enga Governor’s Vision To Produce Top Math And Science Students Comments are closed.
