![]() Not even the painful swollen feet, developed from arthritis would stop a 17 year old from maintaining his grades and finally beating all odds to be ranked number one in the country out of 30,711 Grade 12 students. Isiah was the social science and overall dux of Port Moresby National High School in its recent graduation, who made his school and both his parents, Henrica of East Sepik and Mathew Iovatt of Manus and Morobe so proud of his achievement. Following a dengue fever attack, over the last two years, Isaiah's life has been about visiting hospitals, blood tests and taking so much medication to stop the endless pain he felt in his knees, toes and ankles. Mrs Iovatt describes her son as an intelligent young man who begin memorising animals name when he was just a toddler, did crossword puzzles in Grade 3, skipped Grade 1 and then 4 and 5 and ended up getting dux in Grade eight, overall runner up in Grade 10 and Dux in Grade 12.
Isiah is also an avid book reader, who reads widely, does alot of research and never stops learning. "At a very young age the doctors said he has juvenile arthritis and I didn't want to believe that," Mrs Iovatt said. "The dengue fever affected his bones and all his joints got swollen; I would tell him to stay home but he would not as he did not want to miss class," Isiah said despite the pain, "sickness is not significant to my life" and wanted to be strong as he had a goal and didn't want to worry his parents. In Grade 11, Isaiah would take painkillers once a day but has slowed down this year since the pain subsided. He is now on herbal treatment and his mother said doctors are yet to come up with a definite diagnosis.
