The Kila Haoda Scholarships for central province students attending tertiary and theological institutes is on again and applications have opened.
Over 430 application have already been submitted and more are expected to be lodged during the coming weeks says projects coordinator, Joseph Loi. K2 million kina has been allocated to subsidise students’ tuition fees where by each student will be subsidised K2000 each of the total fee and the rest to be paid be the parents and guardians. Already the scholarship scheme has given a second chance to villagers who have lost hope due to not having enough to meet tuition fees, some having had left school 4 to 8 years ago. Central Province Governor, Kila Haoda has always resonated sentiments of his will to focus on education, making it the first priority. Mr Haoda said Cetral Province has always being a top in the past until a few years ago and so has made it his business to put Central Province back to its past glory days. The Governor and his office last year spent over K2 million last year and this has been the case since 2013. “We have not failed since 2013, having to pay all the institutions the approved applicants are attending,” Mr Loi, the project coordinator said. The call the office of the governor is making is for the institutions to accept the guarantee letters issued by the office, and allow the students to attend class as payment will be made when the finances are ready. “I am trying my best to change the system and make payments as soon as possible once the accounts are opened,” Mr Loi said. Mr Loi said over K6.2 has been used by the Provincial Government on this scholarship since taking office in 2012 while a lot more is spent on renovating other primary and elementary schools in the vicinities of the province.

I believe that this initiative by the governor will achieve just what the governor had planned for it. Central students are just as able to succeed academically as students from any where else in PNG let alone the globe. But is due to the reason of scarcity in terms of available spaces in tertiary institutions and lack of funding that most often than not,has resulted in the diminishing performance of students within the country and abroad. Thus I'd like to thank the governor for initiating this program and look forward to a better central province that will arise in the near future, as a result of initiatives such as these.
