![]() Most Port Moresby residents have at one time or another commuted in a Comfort Taxi car, many more are all too familiar with the popular blue colored older Toyota crown models with taxi plates seen all over the city, but only a few have heard of the name behind the brand. From a grade 10 school leaver to police officer to starting, owning and operating Port Moresby’s largest public transport service company, Nathan Milyo’s Comfort Taxi Service brand is truly a Pom city household name. Well known and liked all around the city, how did the former policeman grow a taxi company to be as vast and successful as they are today? Owner Nathan, attributes their growth and success to some simple but core human values. “Honesty pays off”, says Nathan, 54. Speaking to PNG Entrepreneur magazine, from his operation’s base at Kennedy estate, the father of eight shared how he grew an experiment with five cars to what is now a taxi service business that operates with a massive fleet of 300 cars, over 300 full-time drivers, part-time drivers and even reserve drivers. “I always do things straight, I don’t take shortcuts, I follow the rules and I pay my bills on time. I did not just start a taxi service company and become successful overnight, I don’t even like to call myself a business owner, I’m just a dad working hard to take care of my family.” With his raw honesty and realistic views, Nathan’s story is similar to many Papua New Guineans who started from humble beginnings to eventually breaking out to carve a name for themselves on the local scene. After finishing off grade 10 from Laiagam High School, Enga province, Nathan entered the Police force in 1985 upon completion of recruitment and training at the Bomana Police College. Whilst serving in the force, he matriculated at the University of Papua New Guinea in 1990 for three years, finishing off in 1993; going an additional two years, from 1993 to 1995 to earn a qualification in what was then called “Police Studies” also at the University of Papua New Guinea. Nathan juggled studies while serving in the force and after clocking in just under 20 years with Her Majesty’s Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, he resigned from the police force in 2003 after making the rank of a sergeant. The timeline of Milyo’s career as an entrepreneur begins in 2003 with the establishment of a security company, as well as several small shops around the city. “I did not even think about starting a taxi service, because I thought the risk was too high”, Nathan admitted, “but with the encouragement of my friend after entrusting to me five small cars from the dealership to try, I gave it a shot. Within six months, we grew from five cars operating as taxis to ten cars. Today, we have at least 300 taxis operating in Port Moresby.” Pick up a copy of our latest issue to read the full story of Nathan's success.
