Schools throughout the country may breathe a sigh of relief; maybe just a slight relief after K50 million in tuition fees was remitted into school accounts last Friday. The K50 million is part payment of K150 million in tuition fee that is expected to be paid by end of this term. Although a break up of the K50m could not be ascertained, it was made known by the minister that this information would be provided to the public soon.
Education Minister Nick Kuman said yesterday that the government still owes K100m for the second quarter payment for the second term. In the first quarter of the year, K150 million was remitted. Another K150 million is expected for the second quarter. Altogether this year, K200 million has been given to schools as of last Friday. Minister Kuman is adamant that the remaining payment for the second quarter will be remitted despite the quarter or term almost up for the year. The payment of tuition fees is a never ending story and a nightmare for principals. Almost all schools have been starved off tuition fees and in the beginning of the year many schools threatened to close doors. Meanwhile the minister has commended political leaders for assisting schools at the brinks of closure in their districts during the trying financial times by helping schools get back into operations by buying food rations or donations.
