The Member for Ialibu-Pangia and former Prime Minister Peter O'Neil has allocated K2 million to subsidize the tuition fees for Ialibu-Pangia students who are studying in respective institutions in the country and overseas. The K2 million subsidy will be used to subsidize the tuition fees for more than 900 students. Students studying in overseas institutions will be subsidized with five thousand kina, while students studying in higher learning institution (within the country) will be subsidized with two thousand kina and students in colleges and technical schools will receive one thousand kina respectively. The tuition fee assistance scheme was first initiated in 2016 by Ialibu-Pangia DDA and for six consecutive years, the DDA has allocated K12 million into the scheme.
The Tuition Fee Assistance Scheme Coordinator, Danstan Guli, says the K2 million subsidy will support over 900 plus students to ease their tuition fee problems. "Thus, 230 students are from the University of Goroka, 129 students are from UPNG, 90 are from the Lae University of Technology and the rest are from colleges, technical schools, and those students studying overseas," said Guli. He further added that the subsidy allocated by the DDA should have been used for the delivery of other fundamental, basis services and developments of the district, however, our member, Peter O'Neill, believe so much in building human resources in our district. "That is why the DDA has continued to invest heavily in uplifting the burden of school fees . Guli added. "The intention of the scheme is to boost the human resource of Ialibu-Pangai and to remind the students that the DDA has a legacy in you. "It is the pride of the member (Peter O'Neill) to share the cost of your studies." Guli added. Wayne Wama, the outgoing President of UPNG Ialibu-Pangia Students Association thanked the Ialibu-Pangia DDA for the continuous support in uplifting the burdens of the students and the hard working parents. "Though, there is a need to use such funds for the development purposes of the district but our MP Peter O'Neill believe so much in human resource, hence, he has continued to help us the students with the subsidy. "Some people make criticism by saying; you don't seek free handout from your MP, school fee is the core responsibility of your parents & not the MP's responsibility, but Peter O'Neil with his knowledge and wisdom, he always does what is right and for that, I would like to thank our honourable member Peter O'Neill for his continuous support," Said Wama. Meantime, the DDA officials have responded that, they are verifying the names & other basic information of the students before processing the funds into the accounts of the respective institutions. The students of Ialibu-Pangia in respective institutions have been encouraged to be more productive while pursuing their studies and have been challenged to change their district in any little ways possible with the knowledge they have gained.
